Nel 1703 una terribile carestia si abbattè su buona parte del Regno di Napoli, accanendosi in modo particolare sulla città di Taranto.
Don Diego Calò, nobile tarantino, fece costruire da un cartapestaio napoletano le statue di Gesù morto e dell'Addolorata per portarle in processione in occasione della Pasqua e invocare protezione per la città.
Dopo quattro mesi di siccità cominciò una pioggia abbondante e ancora oggi il rito ricorda quell’evento miracoloso.

Ma qual è il vero significato dei riti? Come vengono vissuti dai suoi partecipanti e dall’intera comunità di questa città del sud Italia?

Il troccolante, uno dei protagonisti delle processioni, sarà la nostra guida d’eccezione. Le sue parole ci condurranno dentro questa intensa tradizione popolare. E i suoi occhi – uno sguardo interno al rito filtrato dai due piccoli fori del suo cappuccio – ci faranno vedere e rivivere la bellezza e la forza di un mondo carico di intense e antiche emozioni.

Don Diego Calò, noble tarantino, ordered a Neapolitan cartapestaio to build statues of Jesus Dead and of Addolorata to be used in a procession on the occasion of Easter and invoke protection for the city.
After four months of drought a plentiful rain began and still today the rite recalls the miraculous event.
But what is the true meaning of the rites?How is experienced by its participants and by the wider community of this city of the Italian south? The troccolante, one of the main character of the processions, will be our driving experience. His words will lead us in this intense folk tradition. And his eyes - a filtered look from inside the rite from the two small holes of his hood - will show us and allow us the relive the beauty and strength of a ancient world full of intense emotions.
